We Latinos have strong ties to our families, ties that have the power to transform entire communities.
Many families are matriarchal, often led by the influence and strength of a wise grandmother. Mine was young for 102 years. Her name was Francisca Emilia Gigante–Mamaquita to her grandchildren and great-grandchildren–and she was the youngest of 13 siblings. Her life stories inspire my decisions. They are wise lessons for those who choose to become entrepreneurs.
Studies confirm that companies with women in leadership positions are more profitable. This means that if you don’t have women on your management team, you’re basically leaving money on the table. I invite you to seek inspiration from the women in your life who have been role models.
Here are five quotes from Mamaquita that I incorporate into all aspects of my life:
1. "I always ask for help."
Cultivate a strong network of mentors and connections that open doors for you. Their expertise will be invaluable to you and your business. Help others too–that’s what it’s all about.
2. "Even if I'm tired, I force myself to go out."
Although there’s always a reason not to go out, look for a reason to simply show up. At events, meetings, workshops, etc. we meet people outside our circle.
3. "I have to eat well and take care of myself."
It’s a marathon, not a sprint. Always remember to prioritize your health.
4. "I saved because I don't want to be a burden to you."
Your financial decisions are the foundation for your future. Manage them well. Know your market, especially how you make money.
5. "I'm 100 years old, and most of my friends have died, but I made new ones."
Adapt. Get up when you fall. Listen and change. Have an open mind and heart.
Now it’s your turn! Power UP!
